The second half of Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom (2009) comprises two additional story arcs. After Ein’s disappearance, mob assassin Reiji takes up with Cal, a blonde orphan who’s eager to become a killer in her own right. Assuming the role of big brother, Reiji shows her the ropes, taking her on scouting missions and one major hit. When he thinks Cal has been killed in a bombing, Reiji heads out on his own–and, improbably, reunites with Ein. Rieji and Ein live as brother and sister in Japan, until a vengeful, grown-up Cal forces them to confront their deadly past. All three story arcs of Requiem for the Phantom suffer from underdeveloped characters, inconsistencies of time, too much on-the-nose dialogue, and absurd plots. Cal somehow goes from wide-eyed moppet to murderous vixen in the two years that elapse between Episodes #19 and #20; two years of peaceful life haven’t affected Rieji’s and Ein’s marksmanship. Despite the body count, which must run well into three figures, Phantom moves at a glacial pace. Shooting mobsters may be evil, but boring them to death seems needlessly cruel.
